Yamunotri – The Sacred Origin of River Yamuna

Yamunotri is the first destination of the holy Char Dham Yatra and holds immense spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. Nestled at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, this sacred shrine is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and natural hot water springs, Yamunotri offers a divine blend of spirituality and breathtaking natural beauty.

The temple of Yamunotri stands gracefully amidst the mountains, attracting thousands of devotees every year. It is believed that taking a holy dip in the waters of River Yamuna protects devotees from untimely death and cleanses them of sins. The peaceful atmosphere and the chanting of prayers create a spiritually uplifting experience for pilgrims.

Yamunotri is not just a temple visit—it is a soulful beginning to the Char Dham Yatra.

One of the most unique aspects of Yamunotri is the presence of Surya Kund, a natural hot water spring near the temple. Devotees cook rice and potatoes in the boiling water as a sacred offering (prasad) to the Goddess. The contrast of icy mountain air and steaming water makes this place truly extraordinary.
The journey to Yamunotri includes a scenic 6 km trek from Janki Chatti. Pilgrims can walk or hire ponies and palkis. The path is filled with mesmerizing waterfalls and Himalayan views that make the journey as rewarding as the destination itself.
